From Wallflower to Welcomer
When I went to my very first networking event, I was deep into building my interior design business — and had exactly one client. I had just joined the Hunterdon County Chamber of Commerce, and they were hosting their monthly “Card Exchange” at a very fancy restaurant. I told myself, this is it — the place to meet new clients!
I packed my new business cards, put on my best outfit, and dragged my shy, introverted husband along for moral support. We walked in, and within two minutes he looked around and said, “This isn’t for me. I’ll be in the car.”
And suddenly — I was on my own.
The room was buzzing with people who all seemed to know each other. I didn’t know a soul. The only person who said hello was the Chamber’s executive director — the one who had taken my membership check. No introductions. No small talk. Not even eye contact. I stood by the wall for half an hour, pretending to look busy, then quietly slipped out, thinking, Well… that was awful.
Fast forward fifteen years: I was Chair of that same Chamber’s Board of Directors, leading those very events, and making sure no one ever stood by that wall alone again.
